In a rapidly evolving and diversifying market like India, Skoda’s lineup has strictly been limited to just petrol models until now, with petrol itself shrinking and currently making up less than 50 percent of the overall market. The Czech carmaker is now finally looking to diversify, having announced an aggressive CNG plan, a return to diesel with the Superb and also EVs, but in limited batches of fully imported models. However, a locally made EV is still crucially missing from the lineup. Autocar India understands that this gap is expected to finally be addressed in 2028 with a locally produced EV.  

India-made Skoda EV details

Having announced a fresh barrage of products, Skoda has now moved on to what it is internally referring to as the India 3.0 programme. The programme is expected to support a CNG-powered Kylaq in 2027 and two locally manufactured battery electric vehicles starting in 2028 – the first will be a 5-seater, followed by a 7-seater at a later stage. 

“We know we have to do electric, so we are now thinking about what would be the best option for an electric car in India,” Martin Jahn, Skoda Auto board member for sales and marketing, told Autocar India on the sidelines of the updated Slavia’s launch. 

While Jahn did not disclose specific details about the EVs, as we’ve reported previously, the EV programme is likely to use an adaptation of the Volkswagen Group’s China Main Platform, or CMP. The version being developed for India is referred to as the India Main Platform, or IMP, and will be tailored to local costs and market requirements.

The group intends to leverage an existing electric architecture while localising the platform, battery system and key components. A high level of localisation will be essential to price the models competitively in India’s mainstream EV market. Speaking to Autocar India, Skoda India brand director Ashish Gupta also acknowledges saying, “The volume EVs are going to come when there is localisation, and that is something which we are working on heavily.” 

Where will the investment for the new EVs come from?

That’s the most important question, with new investment being key to designing, developing and engineering Skoda’s locally-made EVs. We understand the carmaker is close to finalising its next phase of investment in India. The company hasn’t officially disclosed the size or structure of the proposed investment, but sources say it could be around one billion euros. 

Skoda is examining different ways to fund and execute the EV programme, including bringing in a strategic partner. As previously reported, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is in the final stages of discussions for an alliance with the JSW Group. The proposed structure is likely to give the Indian conglomerate a majority stake and bring in the much-needed capital for the EV programme.  

The discussions have yet to reach a formal conclusion, and the final structure and scope of the proposed alliance are still to be announced. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is also examining other funding routes if the partnership does not materialise.

Skoda Auto India plans to bring electric vehicles from its global portfolio to India in limited volumes next year as the Czech automaker looks to establish its presence in the EV market. According to Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India, the company needs an electric vehicle in its portfolio not only to meet future regulatory requirements but also to remain relevant as EV adoption gathers pace in India.

Skoda India to bring EVs: Additional details 

“A lot of things are under discussion. So, for meeting the CAFÉ norms, there are a lot of opportunities available along with electrification, which has to be the cornerstone of meeting all compliance regulations. So that is something which we are aggressively working on,” Gupta told our sister publication, Autocar Professional.

Gupta added that the company needs an electric car in its portfolio since adoption has grown in the last 3 months owing to increasing fuel prices. While Skoda has yet to announce a specific locally manufactured EV for India, Gupta confirmed that the company plans to introduce EVs from its global line-up next year.

“It may not be a local EV, but yes, we just had two blockbuster launches globally of the Epiq and the Peaq. The Elroq is the best-selling EV in Europe. So these are opportunities available to us in limited batches,” he said. He added that in the current duty structure, it will not be possible to bring them at price points that will get volumes. “But definitely we need to urgently showcase our EV credentials and the proof point to India,” he added. 

This will allow Skoda to establish a presence in the EV market without immediately committing to the significant investment required to localise an electric model. With imported EVs still facing a challenging cost structure, Gupta said the initial objective would be to demonstrate the brand’s technology and capabilities rather than chase mass-market volumes. 

Skoda India’s hybrid ambitions take a slow gear 

Skoda’s approach to hybrids, meanwhile, appears less certain. Gupta said the company had previously viewed hybrids as a potentially stronger opportunity than EVs in India, but market data over the past two years has changed his assessment.

“Two years ago, I would have said I would take a bet on hybrid more than EV. But the tax structure has not helped anybody. In the last year, pure hybrids have stayed at 2% of the market. They have not gone beyond that. So, I am not sure whether hybrid is the right way to go. And what the last 6 months have also shown us is that people are more than willing to go for EVs now,” he said. 

The current trade and taxation structure also influences the company’s hesitation. Gupta said the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, while potentially creating opportunities for imported petrol and diesel models, does not provide similar benefits for EVs and hybrid electric vehicles. “I think from a global portfolio point of view, and if I want to bring the cars from the global portfolio with the contours of the FTA as they are, petrol and diesel will definitely be an opportunity. The diesel opportunity opens up; HEVs and electrics do not have any benefit, unfortunately,” he said. 

Gupta said the brand’s positioning in India is a bit above mass and below luxury. “That’s our natural positioning; that’s why customers buy us as well, and if we try to sell to cheap customers, they don’t buy us. If we try to sell to expensive customers, they don’t buy from us. So we have to stay true to our positioning and how customers see us,” he said. The immediate priority, Gupta adds, is to get EVs into the country as the company continues to assess which powertrains can deliver the right combination of regulatory compliance, customer demand and commercial viability.

Ferrari’s first production Luce, known as ‘Chassis 0’, has been sold for USD 40 million (around Rs 382 crore) at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction. The sale sets a new record for the highest price paid for a new vehicle at auction, surpassing the USD 26 million raised by a one-off Daytona SP3 at the same event last year. The entire amount will go to the Ferrari Foundation after RM Sotheby’s waived the buyer’s premium. The buyer will take delivery in the first quarter of 2027 after the car returns to Maranello for final assembly.

The Luce is Ferrari’s first production electric car and its first five-seat model. It uses a quad-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 1,050hp and 990Nm, has a claimed top speed of 310kph and a claimed driving range of 530km. Ferrari has already confirmed that its planned 2026 allocation has been fully reserved.

Ferrari Luce ‘Chassis 0’: what makes it special?

The car sold at auction is the first production example of Ferrari’s first all-electric model. Called ‘Chassis 0’, it has been created through Ferrari’s Tailor Made programme and features several bespoke elements that will not be offered on regular production cars.

Its exterior is finished in a unique Madreperla Semi-Gloss paint developed specifically for this car. Ferrari says the finish uses a special pigment that changes appearance depending on the angle and intensity of light. Other unique touches include white five-spoke alloy wheels, bespoke brake callipers and special Ferrari badging.

Inside, the cabin features Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, with Grigio Corvara trim replacing the standard black interior elements. The upholstery has been designed to reflect and diffuse light, matching the car’s overall theme.

Ferrari Luce ‘Chassis 0’:Auction and delivery

RM Sotheby’s auctioned the car without reserve and waived the buyer’s premium, meaning the full USD 40 million sale price will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation to support educational initiatives. The car will now return to Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters before being delivered to its owner in early 2027.

The final bid was far higher than the pre-sale estimate of just over USD 1.1 million and more than 60 times the Luce’s 550,000-euro (USD 640,000) starting price. The winning bidder was American billionaire investor and Ferrari collector Herbert A. Wertheim.

Porsche could axe the Taycan by 2030, reported German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche. This comes just a couple of months following the global unveiling of the 2027 Taycan, and about five months after Porsche’s plan to merge the Taycan and Panamera nameplates.

Demand for the brand’s first fully electric car has been weak in recent years

After hitting a peak of 40,960 units in 2023, the whole of 2025 saw worldwide sales of the Taycan dropping by over 60 percent (at 16,339 units). Similarly dismal numbers have led Porsche to halt production of the Taycan several times over the years, Autocar UK highlighted. A phased ramp-down aside, Porsche’s plans with the Taycan also included an immediate cessation of its production, as per WirtschaftsWoche’s report.

Even though the automaker is yet to officially sign on the paperwork, the German report claims that an understanding has been realised with Porsche’s Executive Board and General Works Council agreeing to proceed with a gradual discontinuation. In effect, this means that the Taycan is likely to be made at the automaker’s Stuttgart facility till its production comes to an end.

While the Taycan may bow out, Porsche is unlikely to give up on its aspirations for high-performance electric sedans. A successor is likely to join the Panamera line-up and likely be unified under a single nameplate, similar to what the brand has done before with the Macan and Cayenne line-up, Autocar UK explained. During his interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Porsche CEO Dr. Michael Leiters, said, “In the short term, we are not planning to discontinue the Taycan. We have invested a lot in the model and want to observe how demand develops.”

The Leipzig facility handles production of Porsche’s combustion and fully electric models

Porsche’s Leipzig facility is where models such as the Panamera and Macan Electric are currently produced. However, its capacity isn’t being utilised as optimally as the automaker had once expected, according to Autocar UK. Meanwhile, WirtschaftsWoche’s insider sources claimed that Porsche was intending to move the Taycan’s production from the existing Stuttgart facility to the brand’s more accommodating establishment in Leipzig, whose production line can handle petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models.

If Porsche wishes to consolidate and lower costs by benefiting from economies of scale, it could move the production of the expected Taycan successor to this facility. The German luxury marque has already written off EUR 1.8 billion owing to delays of this upcoming model’s platform development, according to Autocar UK.

While the full interior will be seen on September 23, the teaser reveals that Bentley, always known for its tactile interior controls, is not doing away with physical buttons on the Torcal. The Torcal will get these physical controls on the steering wheel and the centre console. 

The teaser video also reveals a curved climate control panel on the centre console, which could be integrated with the infotainment system, like on the Porsche Cayenne Electric. Beneath the screen are a slew of physical controls for AC, volume and starting/stopping the EV. In fact, the temperature, blower control buttons and volume scroller are not only finished in silver for added contrast but also textured.

Another standout feature is the illuminated rotary dial surrounding the push-button start/stop. This control operates the ‘Curation Engine’, tailoring the EV’s character through four drive modes: Bentley, Comfort, Sport, and Refresh. Each mode goes beyond adjusting the vehicle’s driving dynamics, also transforming the cabin atmosphere by altering the lighting, soundscape, and even air quality for a distinct sensory experience for the user.

Other bits seen on the teaser include winged seat headrests, light-coloured seat upholstery with embroidered Bentley logos, a mix of fabric, carbon-fibre and leather materials on the door pads with ambient lighting, and carbon-fibre and wooden trims on the dashboard. Physical buttons for locking and unlocking the doors, circular speakers and circular AC vents can also be spotted. 

Bentley Torcal EV: Other details

Built on the PPE platform; will get a 113kWh battery pack with around 500km range

The Bentley Torcal EV shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Group’s PPE platform. The Bentley EV will not only share the platform with the Porsche Cayenne Electric, but will also use its 113kWh battery supporting up to 390kW DC fast-charging speeds. Commenting on the Torcal’s range, Bentley’s director of design, Robin Page, previously told our sister publication Autocar UK that “customers are basically telling us that 300-350 miles (483-563km) is that sweet spot”. 

The Bentley Torcal is expected to be offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup as standard. However, it will be interesting to see whether it matches the Cayenne Electric Turbo’s total output of 1,156hp and 1,500Nm.

The Windsor EV is 300mm longer and 45mm wider than the Syros EV – the MG offers 150mm more wheelbase than the Kia, too. While there isn’t much between them in terms of height, the Windsor EV’s boot is 189 litres larger than that of the Syros EV. The latter’s wheels are also an inch smaller. The X-Line ER (Extended Range) variant of the Kia Syros EV gets a 51.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is just 1.5kWh smaller than the unit powering the top-spec MG Windsor. Despite this capacity disadvantage, the Syros EV’s claimed range is actually higher, by 77km higher.

Compared to the top-spec MG Windsor’s 60kW DC fast-charging capability, the Syros EV’s DC fast-charging limit is 40kW higher. Unlike MG, Kia’s claimed DC fast-charging time accounts for a SoC (state of charge) of 10-80 percent and not 20-80 percent. Taking all this into account, the Syros EV can be unplugged from a DC fast charger 11 minutes sooner, which would benefit regular long-distance users.

While neither automaker has listed the kerb weight of their cars, the smaller Syros EV is likely to be lighter than the Windsor EV. The former’s front-mounted electric motor also offers 35hp and 55Nm more. These two factors combine to give the Syros EV a claimed naught to 100kph sprint time of 8.1 seconds.

Both these cars are reasonably well-equipped in their respective top-spec variants. However, there are some distinct differences between the features that are offered in each. The Syros EV comes with front fog lamps plus fancier ‘welcome’ lighting functions as well as puddle lamps that project the ‘Kia’ logo – these make for a more premium experience when approaching the car. The Syros EV also goes for a rugged look, featuring black plastic cladding on the wheel arches and bumpers.

Compared to the Syros EV’s stylish multi-reflector LED headlamps, the Windsor EV uses projector LED units. While it doesn’t get front fog lamps, the MG features cornering lamps that can prove useful when driving in the dark. At the back, the top-spec Windsor EV gains a powered tailgate – another handy feature especially when your hands are occupied.

Both cars come with wireless charging, leatherette seats, connected-car tech, and multiple USB ports for added convenience. However, in its top-spec X-Line ER avatar, the Kia Syros EV offers a third screen specifically to control the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) system. That said, there are physical buttons to operate this system, too. The Kia EV also gets a larger driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof that opens, ventilation function for the front & rear seats, plus rear sunblinds. Furthermore, the Syros EV’s interior design, quality and layout of its switchgear, plus the overall usability remain easily sufficient.

As for the fully loaded Essence Pro variant of the MG Windsor EV, its pièce de résistance is the massive 15.6-inch infotainment screen. Given its minimalistic interior layout, almost every control or feature is integrated into this main display. While this screen can be distracting, it comes with multiple customisation options and integrates various games and streaming services. Compared to the Syros EV’s 64-colour ambient lighting system, the Windsor’s supports 256 colours. Its driver’s seat also gets 6-way power adjustment, while the Inifinity premium audio rig features 9 speakers instead of the Kia’s 8-speaker setup.

The Windsor EV comes with Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes, while the Syros EV only gets Eco, Normal and Sport. While the sub-4m Syros EV directly rivals the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO, the Kia’s pricing sees quite a bit of overlap with that of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, which is of a segment above. In fact, the top-spec trims of both electric SUVs are identically priced. Therefore, we compared the top-spec versions of the Syros EV and e Vitara on paper to determine which electric SUV offers more bang for your buck.

Expectedly, the Syros EV is 280mm shorter overall (150mm shorter wheelbase) than the e Vitara, but interestingly, the Kia compact SUV is 5mm wider and 30mm taller. Neither Kia nor Maruti Suzuki quote precise boot space figures for their respective electric SUVs, but it’s worth noting that the Syros EV comes with a 16-litre frunk, while the e Vitara completely lacks storage space up front. However, the top-spec e Vitara does get larger alloy wheels than the equivalent Syros EV.

The Syros EV’s battery pack is almost 10kWh smaller than that of the e Vitara, but the Kia is only 17km behind in terms of ARAI-claimed range. Both electric SUVs are front-wheel drive and make similar amounts of power, but the Syros EV edges ahead by a significant 62Nm in terms of torque output. This is partly why the Syros EV claims a 0.6sec quicker 0-100kph time than that of the e Vitara.

Kia and Maruti Suzuki quote AC charging speeds at different wattages, so the Syros EV and e Vitara can’t be directly compared on this front. However, it’s noteworthy that though the e Vitara has a larger battery than the Syros EV, the former takes roughly the same amount of time for a 10-100 percent charge at 7.4kW as the latter does at 11kW. Coming to DC charging, the Syros EV supports up to 100kW, while the e Vitara tops out at 70kW.

Both electric SUVs are quite evenly matched in terms of exterior features, but the Syros EV takes the lead by way of roof rails and door-mounted puddle lamps that project the Kia logo. The Syros EV has flush door handles too, but some may appreciate the e Vitara’s conventional door handles more. Colours are a square win for the e Vitara, as it offers six monotone options and four dual-tone finishes. The Syros X-Line ER can be had in either Aurora Black Pearl or Matte Graphite, both of which are difficult to maintain. Buyers who want other colours have no option but to consider lower-spec Syros EV variants.

Coming to safety, the e Vitara finally scores a win. It’s the only one here to come with seven airbags and rain-sensing wipers, whereas the Syros EV sets itself apart with side parking sensors. The e Vitara also holds a 5-star crash safety rating from Bharat NCAP, while the Syros EV has not been tested yet. It’s worth noting, though, that the ICE-powered Syros was awarded 5 stars by Bharat NCAP, so a similar rating for the compact SUV’s electric derivative is very possible.

As noted previously, there is next to no difference in the pricing of the Syros EV X-Line ER and e Vitara Alpha, which means the final decision comes down to your needs and preferences. If you want as many features as possible, are fine with a dark colour, and don’t mind smaller dimensions and funkier styling, the Syros EV X-Line ER is the one to go for. On the other hand, if you want the price you pay to be reflected in the size of the car, more choice in colours, more conventional looks, and are happy to forgo some features, you can consider the e Vitara.

It’s also worth noting that both the Syros EV and e Vitara can be purchased with battery-as-a-service (BaaS), which converts the cost of the battery into separate usage-based EMIs, thereby lowering the upfront cost. Kia has yet to reveal the BaaS price of the Syros EV X-Line ER, but the e Vitara Alpha costs Rs 14.49 lakh – Rs 5.5 lakh off the sticker price – with a Rs 4.39/km battery usage fee.

EV sales H1 2026: Mahindra takes second spot from MG; Maruti ranks fourth

Electric vehicle sales in India rose 79 percent year on year (YoY) to 1,48,023 units in the first half of 2026, up from 82,535 units during the same period last year. Tata Motors retained its lead, while Mahindra recorded the highest growth among the three largest EV makers and moved ahead of JSW MG Motor. New entrants Maruti Suzuki and Vinfast also contributed over 12,000 units to the segment during the six-month period.

Sales accelerated during the second quarter. Year on year, EV registrations rose 64 percent to 62,178 units in January-March and 93 percent to 85,845 units in April-June. June was the first month in which electric passenger vehicle sales crossed 30,000 units, reaching 32,259 units – more than double the 15,203 units recorded in June 2025.

Tata Motors 

57,370 units, up 82 percent YoY

Tata Motors retained the top spot with 57,370 electric cars and SUVs sold in H1 2026, an 82 percent increase from 31,556 units a year ago. Its market share increased marginally from 38 percent to 39 percent.

The carmaker crossed 10,000 monthly EV sales in both May and June, selling 10,894 units and a record 12,384 units, respectively. The Nexon EV remains its main volume driver, while the new Punch EV and updated Tiago EV have expanded its line-up. Tata also recently launched the Sierra EV, joining the Harrier EV, Curvv EV and Tigor EV in its electric portfolio.

Mahindra 

34,131 units, up 147 percent YoY

Mahindra recorded the highest growth among India’s three largest EV manufacturers, with sales rising 147 percent to 34,131 units from 13,801 units in H1 2025. Its market share increased from 17 percent to 23 percent.

The company moved ahead of JSW MG Motor in March and retained second place through the first half of the year. Monthly sales increased from 5,873 units in March to a record 7,926 units in June. Demand for the BE 6 and XEV 9e has been supplemented by the XEV 9S, Mahindra’s three-row electric SUV launched last November.

JSW MG Motor 

31,819 units, up 18 percent YoY

JSW MG Motor sold 31,819 EVs in H1 2026, up 18 percent from 26,883 units in the year-ago period. However, its market share fell from 33 percent to 21 percent as Tata and Mahindra recorded faster growth. The Windsor remains MG’s bestselling electric model, with around 19,000 units sold during the first six months of 2026. MG’s EV line-up also includes the Comet, ZS EV, Cyberster and M9.

Maruti Suzuki

6,404 units

Maruti Suzuki, which entered India’s electric car market with the e Vitara in January, sold 6,404 units in H1 2026, giving it a little over 4 percent market share. Sales increased from 1,460 units in the first quarter to 4,944 units in Q2, with June registrations reaching a record 1,940 units. Maruti is expected to increase e Vitara production from August or September.

Vinfast 

5,627 units

Vinfast recorded 5,627 sales during the first half of 2026, capturing a 3.8 percent market share. Its quarterly sales increased from 1,630 units in Q1 to 3,997 units in Q2, with June sales reaching 1,415 units. The Vietnamese company’s India line-up currently includes the VF6 and VF7 SUVs, along with the VF MPV 7. Vinfast is also expected to expand its range with the VF3 electric hatchback.

BYD 

3,300 units, up 32 percent YoY

BYD sold 3,300 electric cars and SUVs in H1 2026, up 32 percent from 2,507 units a year earlier. Q2 sales doubled to 2,199 units from 1,101 units in the first quarter, while June registrations reached a record 895 units. The company has confirmed plans to introduce the Seal U later this year, set to be its first plug-in hybrid model in India.

Hyundai 

2,725 units, down 36 percent YoY

Hyundai was one of the few manufacturers to record lower EV sales, with deliveries falling 36 percent to 2,725 units from 4,278 units in H1 2025. Its market share declined from 5 percent to under 2 percent. Hyundai currently has two electric models on sale in India – the Creta Electric and Ioniq 5 – amid growing competition from Tata, Mahindra and MG, all of which offer EVs across a wider range of price points.

Kia 

2,643 units, up 941 percent YoY

Kia recorded 2,643 EV sales in H1 2026, compared with 254 units during the same period last year, an increase of 941 percent. The carmaker finished just 82 units behind Hyundai during the six-month period. The increase follows the addition of the Carens Clavis EV, which joined the EV6 and EV9 in Kia’s electric line-up. Kia sold 1,278 EVs in Q1 and 1,365 units in Q2.

Citroen 

196 units, down 76 percent

Citroen recorded 196 EV sales in H1 2026, down 76 percent from 815 units a year earlier. Citroen launched the eC3X in June, with prices starting at Rs 11.99 lakh and a Battery-as-a-Service option.

Toyota 

33 units

Toyota entered India’s electric passenger vehicle market in May, delivering 33 units of the Urban Cruiser Ebella. The Ebella is Toyota’s version of the Maruti e Vitara and is available in the top-spec E3 variant and offers battery-as-a-service option.

Volvo India confirms two new flagship EVs for 2026

Volvo India has confirmed it will expand its electric vehicle portfolio with two new 90-series EVs over the coming months. While the company stopped short of naming the models, it said the line-up will comprise a flagship sedan and SUV, confirming our earlier report that the ES90 sedan and EX90 SUV were being lined up for India.

ES90 sedan and EX90 SUV expected to join the line-up

Volvo ES90

Speaking to our sister publication, Autocar Professional, Volvo Car India Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra said the company remains committed to introducing one new electric vehicle every year in India. “We have promised that we’ll bring one electric car every year. We brought in the EX30, and now we’ll be bringing two new electric cars in the 90 series later this year or in the next few months. They are from our 90 series – an SUV and a sedan,” Malhotra said.

Although Volvo has not officially confirmed the names, the company’s current global EV portfolio indicates the upcoming models are likely to be the ES90 electric sedan and the EX90 electric SUV. 

Volvo EX90

Both new flagship EVs are based on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture and use an 800V electrical system, supporting faster charging than the brand’s current EVs. The ES90 is expected to rival the BMW i5, while the EX90 will sit above the EC40 as Volvo’s flagship electric SUV. Both models are likely to be launched in India by Q3 2026.

EVs account for one in four Volvo sales

Volvo said electric vehicles now account for around one in every four cars it sells in India, with the remaining portfolio comprising mild-hybrid models such as the recently updated XC60 and XC90. The company also reported around 6 percent year-on-year growth in FY2026 and said it received an encouraging response to the EX30, which entered a new price point for the brand. Volvo also refreshed the XC60 and XC90 during the past year, with Malhotra saying both models have been well received by existing and new customers alike.

Malhotra reiterated that Volvo’s long-term goal remains to become an all-electric carmaker, although the company no longer has a fixed 2030 deadline because EV adoption varies across global markets. “Our end goal is still the same. We want to become an all-electric car company. But we are not saying that we want to do it by 2030,” he said.

He added that Volvo will continue offering both electric and mild-hybrid models in India as customer demand evolves.
