Climate impact Alert:

Climate impact ON wheat:

Honda CB500 vs Rivals: Price and specifications compared
An render showing the spec comparison between the, Honda CB350, Harley-Davidson X440 T, Triumph Bonneville T40, Royal Enfield Scram 440 and Classic 350

Honda has revealed the specifications for the CB500, so it’s only natural that we see how it stacks up against its main rivals such as the Harley-Davidson X440 T and Triumph Bonneville T40. For good measure, we’ve even thrown in other lower-priced and lower-spec but far more popular alternatives like the Royal Enfield Scram 440 and the king of this class, the Classic 350. Here is how these stack up against each other on paper.

With its large 501.7cc mill, the Honda offers more low-to-mid-range torque than the others, and it arrives the earliest too, at 3,750rpm. The torque outputs in this comparison are largely dictated by the engine’s displacement. In the modern retro segment where riders want an effortless riding experience, a healthy torque output delivered without too much effort is almost a necessity. The only anomaly here is the Bonneville T40, with its short stroke and liquid-cooled engine, making the most peak horsepower, although its torque output can’t match the larger bikes’ figures.

The Honda CB500 immediately stands out because of its kerb weight. It is the lightest motorcycle in this comparison, despite having the largest motor. Of all the bikes here, the T40 offers the most accessible saddle height, and you can further drop it down to 770mm with the accessory low seat.  No bike here is a corner carver and all of them prioritize a laidback and stable demeanour on the side of their tyres. Given that we are yet to ride 2 of the most recent entrants yet, any comment on a comparison of their ride and handling will have to wait until a later date.

If you want your neo retro machine to be able to tackle bad roads, all of them should be up for the job but it’s the Scram that is the most apt for it with its Himalayan-derived suspension and chassis.

While the Harley-Davidson features a USD front fork, the other motorcycles rely on right way up telescopic forks and twin rear shocks with the exception of the Scram, which uses a link-type monoshock. Again, in keeping with their more relaxed nature, the simple spec on offer here is more than sufficient for these bikes’ intended roles. Of them all, the H-D X440 T is likely to be the most agile owing to its more sophisticated front suspension and smaller wheel sizes, which are almost akin to a traditional roadster.

More pertinent here is that the Classic 350 (except for the alloy wheel ‘Dark’ variant) and Bonneville T40 come only with tubed tyres. The Honda comes with tubeless tyres on all variants and save for the base one, the other two come with neat-looking side-laced rims permitting the aforementioned feature.

Honda CB500 vs Rivals: Features

Triumph takes the lead in the features department

The Bonneville T40 offers more features than any bike in the neo-retro segment (even more than its much more expensive twin-cylinder brethren!).  Its electronic throttle body permits  five ride modes (Eco, Road, Rain and customizable Rider A and B) as well as cruise control. A handsome full colour, 4-in TFT dash further brings in turn-by-turn navigation and cornering ABS as well as traction control complete its electronic arsenal.

The X440 T also has a TFT display, but it’s neither as sophisticated nor as pleasing to look at as the one on the ‘Bonnie’. It brings in 2 riding modes (Road and Rain) and has the safety net of switchable dual channel ABS and traction control. While the Honda has the same riding aids as the Harley, it displays information to the rider via a simple and easy-on-the-eyes digi-analogue display which has basic Bluetooth connectivity.
The Scram and  Classic -in true RE fashion – are simple, but not spartan machines. The Classic offers you a slip-and-assist clutch, type-C charger and dual-channel ABS, whereas the Scram misses out the slip-and-assist clutch and further offers you the ability to disable ABS at the rear.

Honda CB500 vs Rivals: Price

The CB500 is priced competitively

Rs 2.75-3.02 lakh

Rs 2.86 lakh

Rs 2.80 lakh

Rs 2.25-2.32 lakh

Rs 1.89-2.26 lakh

Honda has priced the CB500 rather well considering its capacity, what it brings to the table and despite the higher 40 percent GST working against it. In fact, its starting price undercuts both the smaller Harley and Triumph, and not by an unsubstantial amount.

However, in comparison to the slower and smaller REs, the Honda’s price is a segment higher and rightly so, because the CB500 is, for all intents and purposes, a machine from a segment above.  Deliveries for the Alloy variants are expected later this year, and for the spoke and tubeless spoked variants in the first quarter of 2027.

Given what the latest offerings bring to the segment and their differing price strategies, the neo retro segment is now larger and more diverse than ever before with an option to suit just about every need. Choosing between these bikes is more than a simple comparison on paper and will need a more nuanced understanding of what they offer the rider.

5 things to know about the Hero Xtreme 250R Carbon

5 things to know about the Hero Xtreme 250R Carbon
Xtreme 250R Carbon in black colour parked at the launch event

Hero MotoCorp has introduced a new Xtreme 250R Carbon variant with a substantial feature overhaul, adding multiple hardware and tech updates. Here are the five things you need to know about the bike.

1. What’s new on the updated Hero Xtreme 250R?

The Xtreme 250R Carbon features ride-by-wire, which unlocks four riding modes – Rain, Road, Sport and Track – along with traction control calibrated individually for each mode. A bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control and TPMS have also been added. In terms of tech, the LCD instrument cluster has been replaced by a 4.2-inch TFT screen borrowed from the Xpulse 210.

The rear suspension gets Frequency Selective Damping (FSD), a system that uses a secondary valve to automatically vary damping across two distinct profiles based on the speed and frequency of road inputs. It stiffens up to absorb high-frequency impacts, such as road chatter, and softens for longer, slower compressions, such as when going over a speed breaker.

2. What does the Hero Xtreme 250R engine have to offer?

The 249cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine is carried over largely unchanged, producing 30hp at 9,250rpm and 25.3Nm at 7,500rpm. The latter represents a minor 0.3Nm increase over the outgoing bike, delivered 250rpm higher in the rev range.

3. Which is faster, the KTM 250 Duke or the Hero Xtreme 250R?

We found the Hero Xtreme 250R to be the quicker of the two during our tests. The KTM 250 Duke completed the 0-60kph run in 3.44 seconds and the 0-100kph run in 8.50 seconds. The Xtreme 250R, tested on the same day, completed the same runs in 3.15 seconds and 8.22 seconds, respectively.

It’s worth noting that these figures are for the standard Xtreme 250R. However, the engine remains largely unchanged, and Hero’s claimed 0-60kph time for the Carbon is identical to that of the standard model, so we expect the updated bike’s performance to be largely similar.

4. What is the price of the updated Hero Xtreme 250R Carbon?

The Hero Xtreme 250R Carbon is priced at Rs 1.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), a Rs 14,000 premium over the standard Xtreme 250R following an Rs 11,000 price hike for the standard model alongside the introduction of the Carbon variant. Despite the premium, the Carbon remains notably more affordable than the KTM 250 Duke, which costs Rs 2.28 lakh.

5. What colours is the new Xtreme 250R available in?

The Hero Xtreme 250R Carbon is offered in three colours: Carbon Red, Carbon Black and Carbon White. Along with the new colours, the Carbon variant also gets coloured wheels and exclusive graphics.

BMW F 450 RR variants explained

BMW F 450 RR right profile.

BMW has revealed the F 450 RR, its third motorcycle based on the 450 platform. Just like the F 450 GS and F 450 R, the F 450 RR has four variants at launch, although it’s unclear how many will make it to India and at what prices. If you’re thinking of buying the F 450 RR when it arrives, here’s what is different in each variant.

BMW F 450 RR: Variant breakdown

Base

Keeping things simple, BMW calls the F 450 RR’s base variant Base. It comes in a single Cosmic Black colour and offers dual-channel and cornering ABS, traction control, a slip-and-assist clutch, a 6.5-inch TFT display, wheelie control, three ride modes (Rain, Road and Race), heated grips, dynamic brake control and engine drag torque control. Its monoshock is adjustable for preload and rebound, and the USD fork is completely non-adjustable.

Exclusive

The Exclusive variant also gets a single colour – Racing Red. Carrying forward the Base’s feature set, this variant adds a bi-directional quickshifter and Sport suspension that makes the USD fork adjustable for compression and rebound.

M Sport

This third variant comes in a single Snaefell white / M Motorsport colour, and it adds a fourth ride mode called Race Pro. It lets users individually customise control systems such as ABS and traction control.

M Sport with Innovation Package

The range-topping variant shares the Snaefell white / M Motorsport colour with the previous variant and adds BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) to the rider aids on offer. This system first debuted on the F 450 GS’s GS Trophy variant. It effectively makes using the clutch optional, enabling clutchless up-and-down gear shifts.

All four variants have the 420cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that continues to make 48hp at 8,750rpm and 43Nm at 6,750rpm, a KYB 43mm USD fork and monoshock, adjustable brake and clutch levers and a Type-C USB port. The brakes are also the same, with a Brembo 310mm front disc with a four-piston monobloc caliper and a Bybre 240mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper.

The Xtreme 160R 4V has been Hero’s answer since 2023 to the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and the TVS Apache RTR 160, although it hasn’t been as popular. Late last year, the brand launched a higher variant of it called the Combat Edition with cruise control, ride-by-wire and an updated negative LCD screen from the GlamourX 125 and now it’s taking that further with a refined design and TFT display. The bigger Xtreme 250R also sees some big improvements alongside its younger brother.

  1. Retains the 164.32cc, oil-cooled engine; peak power has increased to 17.1hp
  2. Top Carbon variant gets a TFT display
  3. Standard costs Rs 1.27 lakh, Pro costs Rs 1.37 lakh and Carbon costs Rs 1.41 lakh

Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: What’s new?

Sharper design and a stronger feature set

Hero has started the updates with the design of the Xtreme 160R 4V. Compared to the previous Combat Edition, the entire silhouette has been sharpened and it’s most obvious in the fuel tank and the rear seat cowl. There are also new colours and variants on offer. The current base variant has been rechristened to Standard variant, the Combat Edition has become Pro, and a new top-variant called Carbon. Standard gets Firestorm Red and Pearl Black and Pro gets Pro Red and Pro Black. Carbon gets Carbon Red, Carbon Black, Carbon Grey and Abrax Orange.

Moving onto mechanical changes, all variants of the Xtreme 160R retain the 164.32cc, oil-cooled engine but peak power has marginally increased to 17.1hp (versus 16.9hp earlier) delivered 250rpm later in the rev range at 8,750rpm. Torque figures remain unchanged, 14.6Nm at 6,500rpm. However, Hero has separated the Standard variant from the other two quite significantly by way of features. It gets a telescopic front suspension and retains a mechanical throttle. While dual discs are also retained, it only has single-channel ABS and gets the LCD console from the Combat Edition, one of two things it shares with the Pro; the other being the design.

The Pro variant, except for the changes mentioned above, remains identical to the Combat Edition. Which means, ride-by-wire is standard with three ride modes (Rain, Road and Sports), as is cruise control. The front suspension on this one is a 37mm KYB USD fork and the rear is a monoshock that has adjustable preload. Dual-channel ABS is standard and the brake specifications remain the same too, 276mm front and 220mm rear. On the dimensions-front, seat height has gone up by a negligible 2mm to 805mm and the kerb weight by 1.5kg to 149kg.

The top Carbon variant is identical to Pro, except for its new TFT display. While the TFT display itself is shared with the Xpulse 210, Hero has changed the layout and design of it to better suit the Xtreme 160R’s sporty characteristics. There’s no difference in weight between the three variants.

With the updated design and additional features, the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Standard comes in at Rs 1.27 lakh, Pro sits at Rs 1.37 lakh, a significant Rs 10,000 increase. Top Carbon costs Rs 1.41 lakh. Hero specifies all three variants’ prices as introductory. The current base variant costs Rs 1.35 lakh and the Combat Edition Rs 1.38 lakh; though we can’t compare the two base variants directly, the Combat edition has effectively become cheaper by Rs 1,000, with an updated design. The Haryana-based manufacturer says bookings are open today across all its showrooms in India and deliveries will begin from November, in time for the festive season.

All prices mentioned are ex-showroom.

Alongside the heavily revised Xtreme 160R 4V, Hero has also taken the wraps off an updated Xtreme 250R that brings a significant addition of electronics and rider aids.

  1. Gets a TFT display, bi-directional quickshifter, riding modes and traction control
  2. Adds segment-first Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) rear suspension
  3. 249cc liquid-cooled single makes 30hp and 25.3Nm

What’s new on the updated Hero Xtreme 250R?

The engine and overall design remain largely unchanged

For starters, the Xtreme 250R now features a 4.2 inch TFT instrument cluster (from the Xpulse 210) that replaces the older LCD unit, enabling multiple features, including smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and a lap timer. The addition of a ride-by-wire throttle system introduces four riding modes – Rain, Road, Sport and Track – along with traction control. Each mode gets its own traction control calibration. A bi-directional quickshifter is also new, as are cruise control and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Other notable additions include a rear monoshock with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD). It uses a secondary valve system to automatically vary damping stiffness based on the frequency of road inputs, making the suspension firmer over high-frequency surface chatter and softer over low-frequency bumps. The 43mm USD fork at the front remains unchanged.

Not much has changed with regard to the powertrain, and the bike continues to be powered by a 249cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 30hp at 9,250rpm and 25.3Nm at 7,500rpm – the latter represents a 0.3Nm bump, delivered 250rpm higher in the rev band.

The new Xtreme 250R will be available in three new colour options – Carbon Red, Carbon Black and Carbon White. At Rs 1.98 lakh, the added features come at a substantial Rs 25,000 premium over the existing standard Xtreme 250R, bringing it much closer to rivals like the KTM 250 Duke, which is priced at Rs 2.28 lakh.

All prices ex-showroom, Delhi.

BMW has revealed the third motorcycle based on its 420cc engine platform, the F 450 RR. This follows the F 450 GS which was revealed last November and the F 450 R, which debuted as recently as two weeks ago. This trio of motorcycles are manufactured by TVS in Hosur.

The F 450 RR’s 420cc, twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill continues to mete out 48hp at 8,750rpm and 43Nm at 6,750 rpm. Other technical aspects such as the suspension, brakes and kerb weight are closer to its sport-naked sibling, the F 450 R. The standard seat height is 790mm and BMW offers two seat options, to either increase it to 810mm, or drop it down to 775mm. Brakes are the same as the R, a 310mm front disc with a Brembo four-piston monobloc caliper and a ByBre 240mm rear disc. The base variant of the F 450 RR has a kerb weight of 177kg (178kg with ERC).

The F 450 RR has four variants, Base, Exclusive, M Sport and M Sport with Innovation Package. As standard, all four get the exact same rider aids as the R, some of which are, dual-channel and lean-sensitive ABS, a 6.5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity, and three ride modes (Rain, Road and Race).

BMW hasn’t revealed prices for the F 450 RR, or a timeline for an Indian launch, like the F 450 R. For context, the F 450 GS reached our shores six months after its international reveal, which means that the R and the RR could be expected in the first quarter of 2027. Once they get here, we anticipate the F 450 R to be the most affordable option with the F 450 RR sitting between it and the F 450 GS.
