Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 review: Familiar, but better

Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 review: Familiar, but better
Rider going around a corner on the Royal Enfield Himalayan 440

A lot can change in three years, as it turns out. Back in October 2023 at the Himalayan 450 launch, I would have confidently told you that the older Himalayan’s 411 time was up and that the 450 served as a fitting replacement. Fast forward to 2026 and I will now willingly concede that there is very much a place for the new Himalayan 440 in this market.

What’s new and why is it back?

A tempting price as well as meaningful improvements

Price plays a big role behind this change in reasoning. 3 years ago, the entry level 450 was about Rs 40,000 more than the top 411 – a not insignificant, but justifiable increase . Today that gap has nearly doubled thanks to the agonizingly short-sighted new GST policy that levies a brutal 40 percent tax rate on motorcycles that use engines bigger than 350cc. RE is clearly feeling the heat from the new wave of sub 350cc competition because the reborn 440 is priced super aggressively. In fact, at 2.29 lakh ex-showroom Chennai, it costs exactly the same as the top 411 did in 2023, despite packing significant improvements.  Beyond the price, it’s those very improvements that have convinced me that this bike has earned its return in 2026.

The Himalayan 440 is based on the Scram 440 and it brings in the same improvements we saw there last year. The oil-cooled single has been bumped up to 443cc and RE has also strived towards increasing the refinement. An added 6th gear and as well a lighter clutch lever increase the bike’s appeal on the highway and in the city. Work has also been put into improving braking performance and feel.

Himalayan 440 Design and Style – 7/10

New colours, but familiar design

There are three new colour schemes as well, but beyond that, the bike retains its quirky oddball styling, although it does gain a new (average at best) LED headlamp and an updated instrument cluster based on the Scram 440.

Gets an updated instrument cluster based on the Scram 440.

Hopping onto the Himalayan 440 after all these years is like being re-acquainted with an old friend. It more or less looks the same and also feels the same to sit on. The low 800mm seat height in particular is one of the biggest appeals with this bike and it brings back some of the short rider accessibility that was sacrificed by the Himalayan 450.

Himalayan 440 Engine and performance – 8/10

A smooth and characterful engine brimming with torque, but it’s not about speed

The engine retains that same relatively slow thump as its predecessor, but there is certainly an improvement in refinement. You can very much hear and feel the engine through the entire bike, but there are no intrusive vibrations until you build the revs quite high. Unfortunately, the Himalayan no longer has a rev counter so I can’t tell what rpm it starts to feel stressed at, but peak power comes in at just 6250rpm, so the number isn’t that high.

Nevertheless, with this improved vibration control as well as the added 6th gear, a 100kph cruise is now a smooth and stressfree affair. You can stretch that up to about 110kph before the engine’s discomfort starts to become apparent. Top speed is around an indicated 130kph, but this is not the bike’s happy place.

Our performance and efficiency test revealed numbers that you would expect and while this Himalayan is certainly not a fast bike, it’s not slow either. That being said, the 440 is an absolute joy when ridden at a sedate pace. The new-found smoothness, dialed-in throttle connection and oodles of torque make it one of the nicest bikes at this price point to calmly explore the great outdoors. Its 25.4hp power figure is on par with many rivals in the class, but the 34Nm of torque is what makes the difference to the riding experience – as well as the pleasing exhaust sound that occasionally includes loud pops on deceleration. Then again, its 199kg kerb weight is an equally big differentiator to the rest of the segment.

Himalayan 440 comfort, handling and off road – 7/10

Welcoming to short riders and decently capable, but feels its age

The chassis is pretty much unchanged and that means that the Himalayan 440 is very similar to the 411 in terms of dynamics. This is where you become aware that the 440 feels more like a refined version of an old motorcycle, rather than an all new one. It can carry a decent pace on or off road, but it doesn’t appreciate being ridden fast. The main stand starts to scrape at lean on road – or when you land it with some conviction off road – which serves as a reminder to ease off. Keep pushing and you’ll realise that the chassis doesn’t have the same composure as more modern rivals and the suspension certainly doesn’t come anywhere close to the lofty standards set by the 450.

Over normal roads, suspension comfort is good. However, the 440 did not isolate me as well as I’d have liked from the incessantly bumpy concrete surfaces that now sadly snake across large parts of Maharashtra. After an 8-hour ride over mostly concrete roads at highway speeds, I returned home with a slightly sore back. If absolute comfort is a priority, bikes like the Xpulse 210 or Himalayan 450 are where you want to look. As for braking, it is by no means outstanding, but the 440 gets the job done and there is switchable ABS, which is nice.

Himalayan 440 Features and Safety – 7/10

It’s a simple bike but provides most of the essentials

The Himalayan 440 retains its original identity as a rugged, go anywhere, yet simple and basic motorcycle. In terms of features, you get a USB C port, RE’s Tripper navigation display and the aforementioned switchable ABS. Compared with most rivals, it does have fewer frills, but the only real ‘luxury’ that I miss is tubeless tyres. It would be nice to have the option of paying extra for them like you can on the Himalayan 450.

Himalayan 440 Price and verdict – 8/10

Well priced and a unique riding experience

Essentially, this is a back to basics motorcycle and it feels that way in person. If maximum bang for your buck is what you’re after, then the TVS Apache RTX will completely outdo the 440 in nearly all parameters for similar, if not less money. The same goes for speed and aggression – there are better options at this price point. However, if you want a gentle, well-mannered and characterful motorcycle that makes for a convincing travel partner at a reasonable price, then the new 440 definitely packs genuine appeal.

Cruising down Goa’s Porvorim Elevated Corridor in an MG Cyberster

Cruising down Goa’s Porvorim Elevated Corridor in an MG Cyberster
Goa Porvorim Elevated Corridor Flyover

If a holiday in Goa is a fixture on your calendar, you will have noticed that the state has changed a fair bit in the last few years. There is a new airport to fly into, new bridges replacing the old, not to mention the wider highways. The latest upgrade to the state’s road network is the Porvorim Elevated Corridor, targeting a major bottleneck on NH66. We were given an exclusive opportunity to experience it for ourselves before the official inauguration on Sep 9, and we brought along a very ‘Goa’ car for the occasion – the MG Cyberster.

First, a bit of quick history and geography. National Highway 66 is a 1,640km arterial highway running from Panvel in Maharashtra to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. 124km of NH66 is in Goa and, for years, Porvorim has been its most notorious bottleneck. The new 5.15km Porvorim Elevated Corridor lets traffic sail clean over all that congestion below, connecting directly to the Atal Setu bridge that crosses the Mandovi River. It promises to cut travel time between Mapusa in the north and the capital Panaji by up to 30 minutes – a claim we set out to test.

Six-laned Porvorim Elevated Corridor brings North Goa and Panaji closer than ever.

Our starting point was the north end of the corridor, a couple of kilometres away from Guirim village near Mapusa. We started our stopwatch on the concrete ramp leading up the PEC – one we would only stop once we crossed over the Atal Setu Bridge and entered Panaji. And even with 510hp and 725Nm on tap and the road all to ourselves, we would be sticking to the 65kph speed limit.

From the concrete on-ramp, it’s only a few metres until you drive onto the actual viaduct section, which is paved tarmac broken up only by expansion joints. It is not completely straight either – the north end has some lovely sweeping curves. In a car like the Cyberster, it is quite tempting to push through the bends but, exercising restraint, we instead indulged in the joys of open-top motoring. The Cyberster drops its top in 10 seconds at speeds up to 50kph, giving us superb views all around. Importantly, it also raises the top just as quickly, which comes in handy during sudden showers.

No more jams! 5.15km flyover sails over congestion at Porvorim junction.

From the driver’s seat, the panoramic view of Porvorim’s greenery was quite stunning – something you would never notice stuck in traffic below. Drive on, and the road becomes arrow-straight, and you start to notice how close some of the buildings are to the corridor. This proximity to adjoining structures, along with the fact that NH66 had to stay operational below, were among the biggest challenges the engineers faced.

Some buildings were a little too close for comfort making construction quite challenging.

The 4.19km viaduct section is supported by 87 pillars. Each span running between two pillars requires between 13 and 17 individual pre-cast concrete sections. These sections are about 24 metres wide and weigh a whopping 120 tonnes each. They were cast in a yard down the road, trucked to the site, hoisted 11 metres high and installed in place – all in a narrow space between buildings with absolutely no room for error, while ensuring minimal traffic disruptions below.

Considering the challenges, it is quite remarkable that the Porvorim Elevated Corridor was completed in just two years and five months. Below the main structure, 10.30 kilometres of service roads and 28 minor junctions keep local traffic moving, while the corridor sails above it all. Also featured are eight box culverts and a rainwater harvesting system, so the monsoon doesn’t slow traffic down. A modern lighting setup with 515 streetlights has already been installed, while two high-mast lights and ten overhead gantries with cameras are to be put up soon. All constructed at a cost of Rs 641.46 crore.

New flyover part of NH 66 open to cars, two-wheelers and CVs. Speed limit 65kph.

Before long, we were passing the Mall de Goa – close enough to see the expressions on the faces of people in the food court, as they watched the bright red Cyberster whizz past their window. As we made our way down the off-ramp, the stopwatch showed that it had been just over four and a half minutes. Heading towards the Atal Setu, we merged with the dozens coming from the diversion and became part of regular traffic.

And just like that, we were climbing the Atal Setu bridge, which would take us across the Mandovi River and into Panaji. To the right, stunning views of Panaji city and Miramar beach in the distance, and to the left, Old Goa with its historic churches, while above me, through the open roof of the Cyberster, panoramic views of the bridge’s iconic pylons and yellow cable stays.

Drop top MG Cyberster a great match for Goa’s vibe

Coming down the Atal Setu into Panaji, our stopwatch read just under 10 minutes. Even if you factor in a couple of extra minutes for traffic once the PEC opens, it equates to a real-world saving of about 30 minutes in peak hours, which is quite significant. In fact, the PEC is said to have a capacity of 70,000 PCU, or passenger car units, per day, so traffic flow is expected to be quite swift. Simultaneously, it will reduce the burden on the service and other connecting roads below the corridor, improving flow for local traffic too.

Connects directly to (yet another) Atal Setu bridge and brings you closer to Goa’s historic sites.

The Porvorim Elevated Corridor, along with other recent infra projects such as the Atal Setu, the New Zuari Bridge and the widening of NH66, is expected to boost the economy by improving intra-state connectivity to Goa’s industrial hubs, as well as flow between the airports and ports. It should also make commutes easier for residents and change the way tourists experience Goa – less time spent travelling, more time to explore the beaches, the culture and everything Goa has to offer.

In conversation with Sandip Prabhu Chodnekar, Principal Chief Engineer, Goa Public Works Department (PWD)

On the challenges faced during construction

This bridge is about 24 metres wide, but the right of way is only 25 metres. Constructing such a wide structure when both sides are already fully developed was very challenging. One of the biggest challenges was lifting the segments. Each segment is nearly 24 metres wide and weighs around 120 tonnes. We could not divert the traffic, so we had to carry out most of the work at night. During the daytime, we stopped heavy traffic so that the segments could be lifted safely and normal traffic could resume quickly.

Lifting 25 metre wide sections that weigh 120 tonnes called for nerves of steel.

On other highlights of the project

We tried to harvest the rainwater to recharge the groundwater and increase the water table. There is a median between the service roads below, where we are also planting trees. The corridor’s rainwater harvesting system collects the water and directs it into this median. From there, the water flows into pits that we have dug and filled with aggregates and strainers, allowing the rainwater to percolate into the ground. This helps harvest the rainwater and increase the water table on the plateau during the monsoon.

On traffic and usage

Below the corridor, things will be quite different. Once around 50,000 PCUs of traffic are taken off the existing four-lane road, there could be a tendency for people to park on these lanes. So, we will have to manage parking as well. We have streamlined the junctions and completely reworked the at-grade traffic flow. Motorcycles are also allowed on the Porvorim Elevated Corridor.

In conversation with Dr. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister, Goa

On the importance of the project

The Porvorim Elevated Corridor is actually important not only for Goa but also for Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala. Porvorim had become a problem because it is a congested and newly developed city, with development on both sides of the road. Even after the road was widened, it was very difficult to manage, and it had become an accident-prone zone. That is why the Porvorim flyover was required, to ensure smooth traffic on NH-66.

Greater connectivity a boon for residents, tourists and businesses.

On the project’s wider connectivity benefits

With the opening of Manohar International Airport in North Goa, there was a need to improve connectivity towards South Goa. People arriving at Manohar International Airport and travelling towards South Goa were facing a lot of congestion. Now, that congestion will be reduced and this will definitely help tourism and vehicle movement in the state.

Furthermore, there will be better connectivity between the airports and ports, which will have  a positive economic impact. It is also a very important project for the people of Goa. Especially those travelling between North Goa and the capital; they will save time and money, and their daily commute will become much easier.

On Goa’s future infrastructure plans

Almost all the projects on the National Highway network in Goa have been completed. One of the remaining projects is the Borim Bridge, which will connect the Ponda side. The tendering process for it will happen in the next few days.

We are planning to improve connectivity across rural Goa, from one end of Maharashtra towards Karnataka. We are considering a ring road for Goa, because traffic currently comes into the interior areas and cities. In the future, we want traffic to be able to move around the interior villages and across the state without having to enter the cities.

JSW Motors’ Jetour T2-based SUV spied in close detail

JSW Motors' Jetour T2-based SUV spied in close detail
JSW Motors Jetour T2-based SUV spied in close detail

A camo-clad test mule of JSW Motors‘ upcoming SUV based on the Jetour T2 was recently spied on our roads. The T2-based model will be JSW Motors’ debut offering, and it will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It will be assembled at JSW Motors’ Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) plant in Maharashtra.

JSW Motors’ Jetour T2-based SUV: Spy shots explained

Going by the spy shots, the design resembles that of the T2 sold overseas. Even the design for the tail-lights, roof rails and wheels look similar. A design patent filed in India earlier this year suggests the JSW SUV could retain most of the T2’s design elements, while replacing the Jetour branding with the carmaker’s own.

The SUV’s interior was not seen, and specifics around the feature list are currently unknown. The global-spec Jetour T2, for reference, gets a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 540-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, a Sony surround-sound system, ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, a powered tailgate and more.

JSW Motors to price Jetour T2-based SUV around Rs 40 lakh

JSW Motors’ Jetour T2-based SUV: Powertrain details

The JSW SUV is expected to use the Jetour T2 i-DM’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, which features a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, and a 26.7kWh battery pack which powers two electric motors. One of the motors is placed on the front axle and can drive the wheels. The other motor, meanwhile, is integrated into the gearbox to provide assistance during engine starting and torque fill during gear shifts.

JSW Motors to price Jetour T2-based SUV around Rs 40 lakh

The Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid’s combined output stands at 381hp and 610Nm and transmission duties are handled by a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The global-spec T2 i-DM has an NEDC-rated electric-only range of 139km, while the combined range is over 1,000km (brand claimed figure). As of now, the range figures for the JSW Motors SUV are not known.

JSW Motors’ Jetour T2-based SUV: Estimated price and rivals

We expect JSW Motors’ Jetour T2-based SUV to be priced between Rs 38 lakh and Rs 40 lakh, ex-showroom. At this price, it will find itself in the company of the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. However, among ICE SUVs in this price range, the T2-based SUV is expected to offer significantly more power and torque than its rivals.

As for the launch, our sources had earlier indicated a September timeline, but JSW Motors has not yet made any official announcement. Recent reports, meanwhile, suggest that the company will launch its first passenger vehicle in January 2027.

Maharashtra SIR:

Form 6
Form 7
Form 8

  3. Ride to the event and merch have also been teased

India Bike 2026: What’s in store?

Stunt shows, live music, camping, and more

Besides the location change seemingly sticking, the itinerary remains as packed as ever with two days of various events catering to motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts of all kinds. According to the schedule posted on the organisation’s website, there are five different race events, three music performances (artists line-up yet to be revealed), and other staples like food and gear stalls. The races vary between dirt, off-road, time trial, and arena. Each race requires separate registrations and registering to the races are separate from registering for the event itself. Riders interested in racing will need to have an FMSCI licence, although the website clarifies that a one-time licence can be obtained when signing up for one (or more) of the races.

There are also events scheduled for custom builds, stunt shows, and camping and bonfire. IBW is also organising rides to the event from all major cities, and have announced event-specific merch too. However, registrations and further details on all of these are yet to be revealed. If you’re hearing about IBW for the first time, the organisers clarify that owning a motorcycle is not a criterion to attend the event, and it’s open to fans from all walks of life.

Last year, refunds on the tickets were offered when the venue changed from Goa to Maharashtra. This time, the website clarifies that the tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. More information should be available closer to the dates, and can be found on the brand’s website and social media pages.
