3 reasons to buy Lexus ES 350h and 2 not to

3 reasons to buy Lexus ES 350h and 2 not to
3 reasons to buy Lexus ES 350h and 2 not to

The eighth-generation Lexus ES is based on a new platform, gets an all-new design and is available in both strong-hybrid (350h) and EV (500e) guises. Since the core Lexus ES fanbase is all about the hybrid, we are focusing on the ES 350h here. We look at three reasons why the hybrid sedan deserves a spot in your garage, and two reasons why you may want to skip it.

Reasons to buy the Lexus ES 350h

Fuel-efficient powertrain

A hybrid powertrain’s advantage is its range and the ability to ability to skip fuel pumps. While saving on fuel would not be a priority for luxury sedan buyers, it is still a good bonus and can significantly reduce the fuel bill. On a full tank of petrol, you can expect a range of around 800 kilometres. In the city, you can easily run on electric power from home to work without using any fuel. A result of its silent running is the excellent refinement, adding a layer of luxury to the experience.

Lexus ES 350h review – Hybrid luxury sedan back to take charge

Speaking of technical specifications, the ES 350h’s hybrid powertrain comprises a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine and a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Together, this hybrid setup develops 247hp, and gearbox duties are handled by an e-CVT.

Impressive ride comfort

Lexus ES 350h review – Hybrid luxury sedan back to take charge

Lexus has equipped the ES 350h with a soft suspension setup, which, combined with the 19-inch wheels with a tall tyre sidewall, leads to a comfortable ride at low speeds. Even over speed bumps and potholes, the 350h is impressive. It feels composed and confident even at highway speeds, with none of the floating usually associated with low-slung sedans.

Less expensive than rivals

At Rs 66.10 lakh, ex-showroom, for the range-starting Exquisite trim, the ES 350h is extremely well priced. For someone looking for a spacious, refined and reliable luxury sedan for the long run, it makes a strong case.

Mercedes E-Class (left), BMW 5 Series LWB (right).

The top-spec Luxury trim costs Rs 71.80 lakh, ex-showroom, and gets a decent set of features, while still being considerably less expensive than similarly sized rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series LWB. For those who are not chasing badge value and value longevity over flash, the ES 350h is worth a strong consideration.

Like any other car, the Lexus ES 350h has a few limitations. Let us look at a few reasons why you might want to skip it.

Reasons not to buy the Lexus ES 350h

Misses out on some features compared to rivals

The passenger display in the Mercedes E-Class, part of its Superscreen setup, adds to the wow factor; the ES, meanwhile, gets a touchscreen and a digital driver’s display. The ES gets a single-pane sunroof, but a panoramic or even a split-pane sunroof would have helped open up the cabin during the daytime. In comparison, the E-Class gets a panoramic sunroof, while the 5 Series LWB gets a fixed panoramic glass roof. Strangely, even sunblinds are absent from the 350h; the Mercedes sedan offers powered blinds.

Lexus ES 350h review – Hybrid luxury sedan back to take charge

What’s interesting is that the ES’ older version (the seventh-generation facelift) did pamper chauffeur-driven passengers with sunblinds and even media controls. Now, however, AC vents with two Type-C ports are all that is available.

Rear seat comfort not as good as rivals

Lexus ES 350h review – Hybrid luxury sedan back to take charge

While legroom at the rear is plentiful, the raised floor, however, means the rear passengers sit in a knees-up position, and there is no recline function for the backrest. This does not work in favour of the ES, as both the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series are known for their impressive rear-seat experience, which is important for those who prefer to be chauffeur-driven.

The Kia Sorento is the only SUV in the segment to offer a strong-hybrid petrol engine alongside a diesel engine. On the other hand, the rest of the models here are powered by either a petrol or a diesel engine. Secondly, depending on the variant, the Sorento gets either an FWD or an AWD layout; the Kodiaq and Tayron get AWD as standard, and the Meridian offers a segment-only 4WD layout apart from an FWD option.

Comparing petrol-powered models, the Sorento, Kodiaq, and the Tayron utilise a direct-injection turbo-petrol mill. But only the Sorento’s unit is paired with a strong-hybrid system here. Until Kia confirms the combined power output figures of the Sorento hybrid, it’s the Kodiaq and Tayron with the highest power output, and they’re both powered by the same engine.

Taking diesel power into consideration, the Sorento’s slightly larger unit delivers much higher output figures in comparison to the Meridian. Meanwhile, the Meridian is the only SUV here to offer a manual gearbox, while the rest of the SUVs here come solely with an automatic gearbox.

The Sorento’s Rs 27.99 lakh starting price makes it the second most affordable SUV after the Jeep Meridian. Like the Meridian, the Sorento is heavily localised, helping its price range be on par with rivals here. On the other hand, the CKD-built Kodiaq and Tayron begin at a higher price point, with the latter’s top-end variant being the most expensive here.

Notably, a core difference between the SUVs is the seating configurations on offer. Depending on the variant chosen, the Meridian, Kodiaq, and Tayron come with either a 5- or a 7-seat configuration. But the Sorento gets a 7-and 6-seater configuration, with segment-only captain chairs for the latter option.

New Audi Q3 India launch on October 16

New Audi Q3 India launch on October 16
Third-gen Audi Q3 front static

Audi India is slated to launch the new Q3 on October 16, 2026. The India-spec Q3 debuted in August 2026 and is the first of all-new Audis to arrive in India. The German carmaker’s entry-level luxury replaces its second-generation version, which has been on sale for four years and will be locally assembled.

To be powered solely by a turbo-petrol engine

The third-generation Audi Q3 is powered by a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Though power figures are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to produce 204hp and 320Nm. A 7-speed DCT sends power to all wheels via Audi’s Quattro AWD system that’s likely to be standard fitment across the Q3 range.

Gets an aggressive exterior and a tech-laden interior

The new Q3’s exterior bears a more imposing look than its predecessor. Unlike its rivals that sport a traditional headlamp setup, the Q3 gets a split headlamp design with configurable DRLs. In profile, there’s body-coloured cladding, a chrome beltline, 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and a black trim across the side windows and rear windscreen. The back comes with a split design for the tail-lamps, an illuminated Audi logo, and a spoiler.

Inside, the Q3 gets an upmarket interior with a dual-screen setup for the digital driver’s display and infotainment screen. There’s also a four-spoke steering wheel, a steering column-mounted gear lever, and features like a Sonos sound system, a panoramic sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and a 360-degree camera setup.

Expected to be priced at around Rs 55 lakh

With an all-new generation inbound, the new Audi Q3 is likely to command a premium over the current version that retails between Rs 43.67 lakh and Rs 53 lakh. The new Q3 is expected to be priced at around Rs 55 lakh -60 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue to take on the likes of the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Mini Countryman C.

Kia Sorento hybrid vs MG Tomahawk PHEV: Specifications comparison
MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV and Kia Sorento PHEV quick comparison

Kia’s ICE (internal combustion engine) flagship SUV offering in India, the Sorento, is based on the Hyundai Motor Group’s N3 platform. While the Kia SUV is also available with a diesel powertrain, our focus will be on the strong hybrid version for this comparison. As its segment rival, the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV (plug-in hybrid) is also a three-row SUV, and is built around the brand’s new ADAPT platform. Let’s have a quick look on how these SUVs compare in terms of their dimensions, powertrain specifications and prices.

Explore full specs, features and a price breakdown in our Kia Sorento hybrid vs MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV comparison.

Unlike the Sorento’s strong-hybrid setup, where the battery can only be charged by the internal combustion engine, the battery pack of the Hector Tomahawk PHEV can also be topped up by plugging it into either a DC fast charger or a slower AC charger. The Hector Tomahawk’s plug-in hybrid system allows the car to be driven in pure-electric mode over a distance of up to 115km (claimed), with Kia yet to disclose the Sorento hybrid’s EV-only range. Depending on the state of charge (SoC) of its battery pack, the MG SUV can also be driven using different powertrain modes.

In series-hybrid mode, the engine charges the battery while the electric motor drives the wheels. Then there’s the parallel-hybrid mode, where the engine and electric motor both power the driven wheels. Finally, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV can also be driven in engine-only mode with no assistance from the electric motor. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV employs a naturally aspirated petrol engine running the Atkinson cycle, plus a relatively high-capacity battery pack and a single electric motor.

Under the bonnet of the India-spec Kia Sorento hybrid sits a punchier 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with direct injection, developing 180hp and 265Nm. There’s a compact battery pack and an electric motor whose output is rated at 65hp and 264Nm. Kia is yet to specify the combined output of this hybrid powertrain, alongside its mileage and performance figures. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV gets what MG calls a  “Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT)”, while the Sorento hybrid is equipped with a conventional 6-speed automatic gearbox (AT). Furthermore, the Kia’s fuel tank can carry an additional 13 litres of petrol. The Kia Sorento hybrid gets Eco, Sport and Smart drive modes, along with Snow, Mud and Sand terrain modes. While the Sorento hybrid is available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV is exclusively FWD.

On the higher end of the line-up, the Sorento hybrid with all-wheel drive costs a staggering Rs 12.40 lakh more than the fully loaded Hector Tomahawk PHEV (which is front-wheel drive only). While the Hector Tomahawk PHEV has a 7-seat configuration, the Sorento hybrid is also available in a 6-seat format with individual captain seats in the second row. The Kia also offers more power and also has a larger physical footprint. However, if you want the flexibility offered by a plug-in hybrid system and a long list of standard equipment at a lower asking price, then the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV could be the right three-row mass-market hybrid SUV for you.

Kia unveils Syros flex-fuel concept

Kia unveils Syros flex-fuel concept
Kia Syros front quarter static

In a bid to join the flex–fuel race in India, Kia has unveiled the Syros FFV concept, its first flex-fuel car in India. The carmaker says that the Syros flex-fuel can run on pure petrol, pure ethanol, and varying ethanol-petrol blends. Kia is yet to confirm when a production-spec version will come to our market.

  1. Utilises a 1.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine.
  2. The engine comes with an upgraded ECU, TCU, and fuel system.
  3.  Transmission duties handled by a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Kia Syros flex-fuel concept: Powertrain details

Powering the Syros flex-fuel is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. However, the carmaker has not confirmed the power outputs of this engine. For compatibility with varying ethanol blends, Kia has tweaked components like its ECU, TCU, and fuel system. Unlike the standard Syros turbo-petrol that’s paired to a 7-speed DCT, the Syros flex fuel is mated with a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Kia Syros flex-fuel concept: Exterior and interior

Apart from E85 compatibility, the Syros flex-fuel’s exterior remains unchanged from the standard model. You continue to get the familiar boxy, ‘tall-boy’ silhouette, ice-cube LED headlamps with DRLs, 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, roof rails, dual-tone bumpers, and high-mounted L-shaped LED signatures at the back.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Syros flex-fuel is quite similar to the standard model. The dashboard is dominated by a triple-screen display for the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system, and HVAC controls, while you get an array of physical buttons at the centre. Lower down is a wireless phone charger, the same gear lever, and storage spaces as seen on the standard Syros.

With the debut, Kia is India’s second manufacturer to debut a flex-fuel car. Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki was the first to unveil the Wagon R flex fuel, which currently retails at Rs 7.24 lakh. Kia joins the list of carmakers who are working on bringing flex fuel cars to India, as the government pushes for higher ethanol-blended petrol in an effort to reduce crude oil imports.

Kia Carens, Carens Clavis CNG specifications announced

Kia Carens, Carens Clavis CNG specifications announced
Kia Carens Clavis

Kia has officially announced specifications for the CNG-powered Carens and Carens Clavis MPVs on the sidelines of the Sorento launch. Both MPVs will be available with a factory-fitted CNG kit with the 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated engine, and will be offered with a 60-litre CNG tank positioned in the boot. Kia has long expressed its intent to enter India’s growing CNG segment, and this officially marks their entry into this space. So far, the Carens was offered with a CNG kit, but as a dealer-level fitment. Prices for the Carens and Carens Clavis with factory-fitted CNG kit can be expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

In CNG spec, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine will produce 93hp and 123Nm of torque – that’s 22hp and 21Nm less than the petrol-powered counterpart. Kia hasn’t revealed a fuel-efficiency figure yet, but says the engine has been calibrated to not compromise on performance. Kia has also retuned the suspension and upgraded the front disc brakes to account for the additional tank weight. Kia has also managed to retain the spare wheel positioned under the car.
