Throughout my sporting career, I questioned my coaches, challenged ideas and remained curious. Not because I lacked respect but because I wanted to understand, learn and get better. I worry that when athletes feel they cannot speak freely, something far more troubling happens over time. They slowly stop questioning even in their own minds. And when that happens we loose something essential to sporting excellence. We need athletes who question their own work, their coaches, the methods recommended to them and the structures they operate within. Not out of defiance but out of a genuine desire to improve. What some might consider indiscipline may, in fact, be essential to growth. There is a difference between an athlete who refuses to learn and one who refuses to stop asking questions. Sport must be wise enough to recognise that difference.

Skoda will debut a new Sportline variant of the Epiq, the brand’s smallest EV, at the Paris Motor Show 2026. The Epiq Sportline will be the prime attraction at Skoda’s stall alongside 14 other models that the brand plans to showcase at the upcoming motor show. As with other Sportline models, one can expect the Epiq Sportline to sport a blacked-out exterior and interior theme. The Paris Motor Show will be held from October 13 to 18.
Epiq Sportline to be Skoda’s hero car at Paris Motor Show
Expected to come with blacked-out exterior and interior theme
Skoda Peaq Tour De France, 130 RS to also be showcased at Paris Motor Show
Skoda Epiq Sportline: what to expect?
Skoda’s official teaser doesn’t reveal much about the Epiq Sportline, but if other Sportline models from the brand’s portfolio are anything to go by, expect the Epiq Sportline to get several blacked-out cosmetic enhancements. The blacked-out treatment can extend to the alloy wheels, ORVMs, front and rear bumpers and perhaps to the roof as well. On the inside, it will likely come draped in all-black upholstery with contrast re stitching, and perhaps a dark-themed dashboard as well. A few feature additions could also be part of the package.
The Epiq is the brand’s most affordable EV and is based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB+ platform. It’s available with two battery pack options – 38.5kWh and 55kWh – with front-mounted motors (FWD). There are three variants on offer: 35, 40 and 55. The 35 and 40 variants, equipped with the 38.5kWh battery, develop 116hp and 135hp, respectively, while the torque is the same 267Nm for both. The top-spec Epiq 55, meanwhile, comes with the 55kWh pack and produces 211hp and 290Nm.
The Sportline variant could be offered with the top-spec 55 version. Coming to claimed range figures, Skoda cites 310km for the 38.5kWh battery and 440km for the 55kWh unit.
What else is Skoda showcasing at the Paris Motor Show?
Skoda will be showcasing its full range of new EVs at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, which means the Elroq and the Peaq will also be display. Other key displays will include the iconic Skoda 130 RS, which was one of the most successful rally and racing cars in Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During its active career, this beautifully designed two-door coupe collected countless laurels on tracks at home as well as abroad.

Also on display will be the Peaq Tour de France ‘Red Car’. Based on the Peaq Sportline, it serves as a specially modified mobile command center for the Tour de France multi-stage bicycle race. Equipped with six antennas, warning beacons and a refrigerator stocked with champagne hidden inside, the so-called Red Car is a symbol of the entire Tour de France.
Following a rules overhaul, the 2026 F1 pecking order has been shaped significantly by the development race playing out behind the scenes.
Speaking to media, including Autocar India, ahead of the Bahrain GP in Malaysia, Atlassian Williams F1 Team driver Alex Albon says the rate of development is faster than he’s ever seen before in his career. But rather than keeping pace, the team has decided to stop bringing upgrades this year and put its resources into building a stronger car for 2027.
Alex Albon on F1 2026 development war
In previous years, upgrade packages typically delivered a few hundredths of a second. But with teams still trying to understand the 2026 rules, McLaren boss Andrea Stella reckoned upgrades this year can deliver gains of two to three tenths of a second.
“We’re seeing a huge difference. Even when I think about when the regulations changed in 2022, teams are just getting better at becoming more efficient with bringing upgrades to the car,” Albon said, adding that he believes the rate at which teams are progressing is “at least 3x of last year”.
The $215 million cost cap means teams have adopted varying strategies for how to roll out these upgrades. Ferrari has been quite aggressive with rolling out chassis upgrades. Atlassian Williams, on the other hand, focused most of its resources on bringing one major upgrade package to Round 15 at Azerbaijan. The team has struggled with an overweight car and other performance issues in the first half of the 2026 season. The Azerbaijan upgrade package looked to address these issues and it appears to be a step in the right direction, delivering the team’s very first Q3 appearance of the season back at Baku.
Albon points out that the biggest is in the mid-field. “Last year and previous years that I remember my experience in Formula 1, it was always only the top three or four teams that were capable of achieving four or five big upgrades a season. And now you’re actually getting midfield teams very close to achieving the same amount of development rate,” he shared.
“So, yes, it’s been partly also why as a team we’ve been struggling a little bit, because we are now maybe at a similar pace to last year, which obviously is not enough.”
Atlassian Williams F1 Team switches focus to 2027
Atlassian Williams currently stands ninth overall in the teams’ championship, ahead of Aston Martin and Cadillac. When asked about the team’s targets for the rest of the season, Albon said, “Truthfully, this year, we have calculations of our own development rate versus the top teams and the midfield teams. We know which rate we need to be at to be able to overtake them.”
But the team has decided to sacrifice its 2026 development to deliver a stronger car next year. “We know where we need to be starting next year at Race 1, which is the most important. The best way we can arrive to Race 1 next year competitive is to focus on next year. And that means not bringing upgrades for the rest of the year. That means all the simulator work that we’re doing behind the scenes is now focused on next year’s car.” Albon stated,
“We need to be very ambitious and very aggressive with the rate at which we’re going to develop the car next year because the speed at which teams are able to progress is higher than ever.
Albon: Antonelli, Hamilton’s driving style better suited to new cars
Albon also shared that this year’s cars, with a near 50:50 split between combustion and electric power, have forced him to rethink his own driving style. “I’ve had to change quite a lot,” he said. “I think it’s been the single biggest change for me personally to adapt to a different set of regulations.”
He points to two main factors – the cars are now smaller and the tyres have changed significantly. “I think a lot of the drivers who push [at corner] entries – so if you think famously, someone like Lewis [Hamilton], I think Kimi [Antonelli] does a very similar thing – they’re being rewarded. I think it’s complicated, but basically, it’s because the rear tyres are not as strong this year as they were in previous years, relative to the front tyres,” Albon explained.
“The other thing is obviously the deployment, which a lot of the deployment is down to the drivers – the way the driver downshifts and upshifts. Also, the way the driver brakes and the biggest factor is the way the driver goes on throttle.”
As for adapting his own driving style to suit the new cars, Albon said, “I wouldn’t say it was conscious. In the very beginning, it was very difficult to understand. It was very against my personal driving style. We’re in October now, I only just feel like I’m starting to feel natural in driving a car, which is a lot longer than it takes.”
The Indian Navy, in association with TVS Motor Company, has set out on a ‘Fleet to Forts’ expedition with 25 riders on the Ronin intending to cover 1600km across Maharashtra over the next 14 days. The route covers ten historic forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha empire.

‘Fleet to Forts’ expedition: Mission and Vision
An itinerary centred around the past and the future
The expedition was flagged off yesterday by Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale (Chief of Staff for the Western Naval command) and Mr Vimal Sumbly (Head of Business, TVS Motor Company). The expedition will be led by Captain Shekhar Deshpande, with the 25-member group of both men and women consisting of Officers, Sailors, and Agniveers. With the expedition, the group aims to bring awareness about the career opportunities in the Indian Navy, with a special focus on the Agnipath scheme – Indian Government’s short term recruitment program for personnel below Officer rank in the armed forces.

The expedition started from Kohli Stadium, Mumbai with an aim to get back to the city by October 12. The route cuts through interior Maharashtra with the objective of exploring Maharashtra’s maritime history and legacy, and to inspire the next generation to join the Indian Navy. Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale called on the riders to propagate the message to young Indians about serving the nation with pride.
Mr Vimal Sumbly said in his address that the ethos of the expedition deeply resonates with that of the Ronin and that he’s honoured to continue working with the Indian Navy. The Ronin recently received a new Base+ variant, priced at Rs 1.42 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in two new colours, Desert Beige and Sunlit Yellow. With it, there are now a total of four variants ranging between Rs 1.30 lakh and Rs 1.63 lakh. Besides providing the motorcycles for the event, TVS has also equipped the riders with riding gear and will continue to offer logistics, technical and media support for the expedition.
George Russell secured his third win of the 2026 F1 season after fending off a late charge from Max Verstappen. The Mercedes driver survived two Safety Car re-starts to secure his first win since the Austrian GP in June.
After spending six weeks out of action due to a fractured wrist, Isack Hadjar made a strong comeback at Baku with a P3 finish.
Russell wins at Baku, 0.196 sec ahead of Verstappen
Antonelli goes from P16 to P5
Colapinto handed five-place grid penalty for Malaysia
Russell wins Azerbaijan GP
Starting from pole position, Russell enjoyed a great launch at the start and extended his lead in the early stages. He had a buffer of over 10 seconds when the Safety Car was brought out on Lap 31 after Alex Albon’s crash.
Russell aced the re-start as behind him, Verstappen used the slipstream to pass Oscar Piastri to move up to second place. But the race was neutralised once again as Franco Colapinto locked up into the Turn 1 braking zone, taking out his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris. This set the stage for a thrilling duel as Verstappen piled the pressure on Russell.
The Mercedes driver ended up crossing the chequered flag just 0.196 sec clear of Verstappen. “It’s been an incredible weekend and probably one of the strongest of my career so far. I really enjoyed that race and that final stint was some of the most fun I’ve had in a Formula 1 race. We had strong pace throughout and were able to build a good gap, so when the Safety Car came out it was a little frustrating, but around a circuit like Baku that’s always a possibility,” said Russell.
“The restart was probably the most stressful moment of the afternoon with Max right behind me, but I managed it well and from there it was all about staying focused and not making any mistakes. In the final stint we were both pushing hard, and whilst it was intense in the car, those are the moments you enjoy as a driver. I’ve felt comfortable all weekend, and at the moment things seem to be coming naturally behind the wheel. We’re in a good place, but Formula 1 changes very quickly so you have to keep pushing. The aim is to keep working hard, keep building this momentum and hopefully continue fighting at the front over the races ahead.”
Red Bull earns double podium
Red Bull celebrated its first double podium this season as Hadjar finished third. It topped off an impressive comeback round for the Frenchman, who missed the last three races as he recovered from a wrist injury sustained while training.
“You can’t really ask for a better comeback than that. The car has been competitive throughout the week and all over the track, so we had the pace to really challenge and be exactly where we wanted to be. Our approach was key to a strong week; taking it step-by-step allowed me to build confidence and then the lap time comes with that. Ending it with P3 is a really pleasing result,” Hadjar shared.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished P4 and P6 respectively. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli split the two Ferrari drivers in fifth place, battling his way up the order after starting P16 on the grid.
Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad defeated Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman to finish P7. Williams’ Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10.
No points for McLaren
The Baku race ended up being a chaotic affair with seven drivers retiring. It was an especially disappointing weekend for McLaren, as the team walked away from the race with zero points.
Colapinto’s error forced Norris to retire, prompting the reigning world champion to later comment that “some drivers shouldn’t be in F1”. Colapinto has been handed a five-place grid penalty for next weekend’s race in Malayasia for the incident. Despite the Baku circuit not playing to McLaren’s strengths, Piastri spent a good portion of the race firmly in the top three. But a lock up at Turn 1 dropped him all the way down to P15. While he did gain a position after Valtteri Bottas’ late crash, he still ended up P13.
2026 F1 championship standings
Heading into the Azerbaijan GP, Antonelli held an advantage of 81 points on top of the standings. Russell has cut that gap to 66 points after his victory. Hamilton holds on to third place overall, 37 points behind Russell and 13 points ahead of Norris.
F1 will next return to Malaysia for the first time since 2017. Interestingly, the event (scheduled for October 2-4) will be held as the Bahrain GP, with the Middle Eastern kingdom funding the race.
Mark Wood has announced his retirement from international cricket
He always gave everything for the Three Lions, on and off the field
Company off-sites are designed to take employees away from the chaos and stress of everyday work for a few moments of relaxation. At Autocar India, things are a bit different. No cocktails by the pool or playing Housie before dinner. Instead, what we got were six BMW M cars (four M4s and two M2s) and a deserted concrete ground thanks to our friends at Raymond Realty. The day brought pouring rain, wet socks and no breakfast. Sounds like punishment, but not to us.
The objective was simple: pick a car, do your best in the three challenges and earn bragging rights for the rest of the year.
We rarely get to compete against each other, and with equal machinery, there could be no excuses. This was going to be intense.
Challenge 1: The Slalom Switch
Partners picked by (un)lucky draw from a bag of M&M’s as colourful as our Ms, each pair then picks a BMW and makes their way through the cones to the other side. Switch drivers and race back through the cones, then stop within the start box. Hit a cone or fail to stop within the box and you earn a penalty.
The M4 might be tail-happy, but it can also dance its way through cones with precision.
Gavin and Ameya chose an M2 for its compact size. However, the drivers’ wildly different body sizes would play spoilsport here, as finding a seat position that suited both was an issue. A clean run with decent athleticism resulted in a time of 35.93sec.
Soham and Sergius followed in the other M2, with a bit of wheelspin off the line. A rapid driver change, thanks to their slender builds, meant a quick 34.36sec. The time to beat.
Lenny and I went against conventional wisdom and picked the bigger, more powerful M4 over the compact and nimble M2. It might be heavier, but we wanted the power advantage for off-the-line speed, given that each run had, in reality, two launches. We went through the cones super-quick, but we bungled the driver swap, nearly running into each other, and with Soham slamming the door shut and me spending precious seconds opening it, the time, then, was simply thrown away and, well, not worthy of printing.
What was meant to be a relaxing team outing turned into a war.
The chaos subsided as Hormazd arrived with Renuka. Ready to prove that experience counts more than anything else, they put in an honest effort with the M4, which was commendable. But on the way back, Renuka clipped a few cones, which added big chunks to their time.
Self-proclaimed racers Saumil and Rahul were confident as they snuck into the fuchsia M4, certain they could put down the power best. A clean run and swap, but a controversial on-the-line stop caused a ruckus. Penalty given; the time was 36.23sec.
Rahul advising us all before each run, and we dutifully didn’t follow a word of what he said.
Next, Shapur and Nikhil. Power over light weight here, as the pair went for another 530hp M4. The speed gained at launch was soon lost at the driver swap – they both literally ran into each other – and for good measure, hit a cone on the way back, resulting in a penalty and a time of 42.24sec. A new low.
In the end, seeing how incompetent we were at working together, we abandoned teamwork and did the runs by ourselves and agreed the following challenges should be run solo.
Challenge 2: The Free Kick
Hop into an M2, line up behind the large inflatable football and race to the finish line, ensuring the ball goes past the flag poles. The fastest to score a goal wins. The M2 was the car of choice, thanks to its upright front-end, which would be a safe bet for pushing a giant football.
The M2 is agile, surefooted and has massive grip.
With the pressure of being from football-crazy Goa, Sergius had his work cut out. But he did Goans proud, guiding the ball with swift, deft steering corrections, and in 9.9sec, we had our first goal and the time to beat. A run-up-style start with a hard launch turned out to be the fastest way, though, as Rahul scored the goal in just over seven seconds. Talk about choosing the wrong career.
A Zidane-style Panenka was Ameya’s strategy as the ball flicked up with none of Zidane’s flair. A poor 16.64sec, but he managed to score. After watching the slow approach fail, Soham powered through the first half, only to lose the ball and have to reverse to get it in. Way off the times set so far. With a smooth start, Gavin lost the ball towards the end and had to waste time getting around it, which took over 18 seconds. At least the goal counts.
Content is king, and the more angles we have, the more the evidence.
Since the company had paid for the ball (and would also likely have to cover any damage to the car), Hormazd chose the slow-and-steady way. He eased the ball very slowly into the goal, but we cheered louder than we ever had. Appraisals are around the corner. An overly cautious approach, using 4 of the 460hp available, still resulted in Nikhil missing the ball and failing to get it through the posts. Second attempt made it through at a glacial pace.
With enough evidence of how to go about it, I had to choose between rough and smooth, and the former was more enticing. It looked dramatic as the ball flung high, but pushing it through the goal wasted time.
Finally, in an attempt to beat Rahul, using his style, Shapur hit the ball so far off that, by the time it bounced once, he had already reached ahead. He managed to get it in after much effort, but by his next attempt, the ball had deflated. Good riddance.
Challenge 3:The Drift King
Engage ‘Drift Mode’ in the M4 and achieve the best possible score on the Drift Meter.
Rear wheel drive mode and adjustable traction settings allow for some proper tail-out fun on the M4.
Before we got to sideways action, we stopped for some grub. As ridiculous as it sounded to have lunch right before drifting in circles, who can get between a bunch of car journos and brown bags of greasy food? After washing down carbs with sugar, we hopped into the M4s for the ultimate bragging rights. The M4 and M2 are both exceptionally playful, and it doesn’t take a lot to get them to break traction. However, the Drift Meter and the extra power of the M4 made it the default choice for drifting.
The drift analyser on the M4 gives you a detailed report of your work with no place to hide.
To begin with, we were all pretty rubbish, but the levels of traction control and the incredible steering feel meant it wasn’t long before everyone got meaningful slides in. Holding it and making circles was something only a few of us managed, with the Drift Meter further confusing us all. Still, the table alongside tells the story, and while it will start a new war in the office, it was surely worth it.
Off-sites like these might seem like another day at work, but if the point is to relax and rejuvenate, no beach resort will ever come close to smoking some tyres.
Meryl Streep
