Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit will host a sprint round for the very first time this weekend. The Singapore GP is already one of the most physically demanding races on the calendar, but with a Sprint race added to the mix, there’s another layer of complexity this year.

MotoGP, meanwhile, heads to Indonesia’s Mandalika International Circuit with just two points separating Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez at the top of the standings. And lastly, a new DTM champion will be crowned this weekend, with Hockenheimring hosting the 2026 finale.

Singapore will stage the final Sprint weekend of the 2026 F1 season, giving teams just a single practice session to fine-tune their car set-ups.

Max Verstappen clinched his first win of the season last time out at Malaysia, while Kimi Antonelli stretched his championship lead to 84 points after his teammate George Russell retired in the closing laps. The gap between the two Mercedes drivers is already more than three race wins and Russell faces another setback this weekend with a power unit penalty dropping him to the back of the grid.

Mercedes has also opted to split car specifications at Singapore. Antonelli’s car will carry the Malaysia upgrade package along with a new front wing. Russell, meanwhile, will stick to the pre-Malaysia spec car, giving the team the chance to get a direct comparison at Singapore.

Marc Marquez comes to the Indonesian GP just two points behind championship leader Jorge Martin – that’s the closest-ever gap between the top two after 16 races. But Mandalika has been a notoriously difficult track for Marquez; in fact, he’s never finished a Sunday MotoGP race at the venue.

The seven-time MotoGP champion will be hoping to reverse that trend this weekend. “On paper, Indonesia hasn’t historically been my best track, and in the past, I’ve never managed to finish the main race; irony aside, the main objective with the Team is precisely to reverse that trend and put together a strong weekend,” he said.

MotoGP 2026: Marc Marquez wins Japanese GP

MotoGP 2026: Marc Marquez wins Japanese GP
Marquez celebrates Japanese GP victory on the podium

With victory in Saturday’s Sprint race at Motegi, Marc Marquez had cut Martin’s lead in the championship to seven points going into Sunday. After the same result on race day, that margin is now down to just two points. The victory marked Marquez’s fourth win at Motegi and his 79th MotoGP victory overall, on the same circuit where he clinched his title a year ago.

  1. Martin leads the championship, but the gap to Marquez narrows to 2 points
  2. Bezzecchi holds off Bastianini in a tense final lap

Martin leads early

Martin took the holeshot from pole and controlled the opening laps with Marquez in close attendance. By the middle stages of the race, the pair had pulled clear of Bezzecchi in third, with the rest of the field settled into their positions behind. Alex Marquez was required to serve a double long-lap penalty for his role in a Sprint incident and dropped to P9 as a consequence.

On Lap 11, Marquez made a move down the inside of Martin to take the lead. Martin fought back initially and closed the gap to under a second, but the defending champion responded by setting the fastest lap of the race and pushing his advantage back over 1.2 seconds just a couple of laps later. From there, Marquez managed his advantage and crossed the chequered flag for his sixth victory of the season.

Bezzecchi and Bastianini fight for the podium

Behind the leading pair, the more compelling battle in the closing laps was for third. Bastianini set four consecutive fastest laps in the final stages to reel in Bezzecchi, but the Italian held on across the line, with Bastianini finishing just 0.4 seconds short of a podium that would have been his first of the year.

Further back, Raul Fernandez took fifth after a battle with home favourite Ai Ogura, while Pedro Acosta, who recently claimed his first-ever GP victory at the Austrian GP, finished behind him. Bagnaia finished eighth, Aldeguer ninth and Luca Marini tenth.

Championship standings

Martin heads to Indonesia holding a two-point lead over Marquez (333 to 331), while Bezzecchi is now 49 points back in third. The Mandalika circuit in Lombok has historically suited Aprilia, giving Martin reason for optimism ahead of Round 17.

Honda to source Horse 1.2-litre engine for new compact SUV

Honda to source Horse 1.2-litre engine for new compact SUV
Exclusive: Honda to source Horse 1.2-litre engine for new compact SUV

Honda Cars India is in talks with Horse Powertrain to outsource a 1.2-litre engine with petrol, hybrid and CNG options for an upcoming compact SUV, Autocar Professional, our sister publication, has learnt.

Horse Powertrain is a joint venture between Renault Group and Geely, with Saudi Aramco as a shareholder, and it specialises in combustion and hybrid powertrains. It already has a foothold in India: the new Renault Duster, due to launch on October 17, will use a Horse 1.8-litre hybrid. The company is keen to grow its customer base among Indian carmakers and is understood to be planning a local engine plant. Fully localised engines would give buyers like Honda a significant cost advantage.

For Honda, the move would be a major departure. Engines have long been the heart of its cars, and its reputation for performance, efficiency and reliability is built on them. Handing over this core component would once have been unthinkable.

However, Honda faces pressure on two fronts with its current 1.2- and 1.5-litre petrol line-up. It must meet tightening emission and fuel-efficiency norms, and it must offer the multiple fuel options Indian buyers increasingly want, especially CNG.

Developing all of that in-house for a price-sensitive segment is costly, and sourcing a ready multi-fuel engine family would solve both problems at once.

The upcoming compact SUV is understood to be under evaluation with an existing Honda platform used in Indonesia. A price range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh and an October 2028 start of production have been discussed as project targets. Honda has not confirmed the vehicle or its specifications.

A new way of working

The engine discussions are part of a radical change in Honda’s strategy to develop cars for India, with specialist partners taking on a larger share of the work from the outset.

Tata Technologies is being engaged for vehicle design and engineering execution, while TCS is expected to work on the infotainment system. Honda wants design, testing and supplier development to proceed in parallel, helping it bring new vehicles to market faster.

The company is targeting a reduction in the development cycle for a full model change from around 49 months to about 30 months. This is a target for its proposed development process, not a confirmed timeline for the compact SUV.

Honda’s new approach starts with the specifications and price required for India, rather than adapting a global product late in its development. The company would retain responsibility for overall vehicle performance targets and final validation, while engineering partners take a greater role in design, verification and supplier management.

Asked about the reported arrangements, Honda Cars India declined to confirm specific partners or programmes. “We work with a wide ecosystem of technology, engineering and supplier partners. However, we do not comment on specific partners, sourcing discussions or future powertrain programmes,” a company spokesperson told Autocar Professional.

“Honda is continuously strengthening its product development capabilities in India, with the objective of developing products that are increasingly relevant to Indian customers while also leveraging India’s growing engineering capabilities,” the spokesperson added.

Cost competitiveness is central to the plan. Honda intends to make greater use of Indian engineering and suppliers while retaining its vehicle performance and durability targets. It also sees an opportunity to attract customers moving from two-wheelers to their first car. Many of them currently choose rival car brands despite owning a Honda two-wheeler.

PF2 platform plan dropped

Separately, Autocar Professional understands that Honda has dropped the PF2 platform project, which had been expected to form the basis of the next-generation City sedan and Elevate SUV. The decision raises questions about which platform Honda will use for the successors to two of its key India models.

Honda Cars India declined to confirm the change. “We do not comment on speculation regarding specific future platforms or product-development programmes,” the spokesperson said.

The company stressed that the decision should not be read as a plan to discontinue either model. “City and Elevate are important models for Honda in India, and both will continue to play an important role in our business,” the spokesperson said. Details of their future generations, platforms and technologies will be announced at the appropriate time, the spokesperson added.

Honda declined to identify the architecture for future India-bound EVs. It said India would play an increasingly important role as a manufacturing and development base, with future products drawing on Honda’s global electrified technologies and local engineering capabilities.

Yamaha India eyes capacity expansion as plants near full utilisation

Yamaha India eyes capacity expansion as plants near full utilisation
Yamaha RayZR on a production line

Yamaha Motor India has begun evaluating additional manufacturing capacity as it expects its existing 1.5 million unit annual output to be fully utilised within the next two to three years. The Japanese two-wheeler maker operates plants in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh and Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, with a combined annual capacity of 1.5 million units, and is weighing whether to expand within its current footprint or invest at a new location.

  1. Yamaha India’s 1.5 million unit annual capacity expected to be fully utilised within 2-3 years
  2. Domestic sales up 41 percent to 4.1 lakh units in H1 2026
  3. Annual sales target of 50,000 units set for the newly launched YZF-R2

Yamaha India capacity expansion: Key details

New plant requires 3-4 years of lead time; expansion within existing sites also being considered

Hajime Aota, Chairman of the Yamaha Motor India Group, said the company still has space to expand at its existing facilities, reducing the immediate pressure to acquire new land. The decision on expansion – whether at Surajpur, Kanchipuram or elsewhere – will depend on manufacturing processes, supplier allocation and longer-term domestic and export requirements. “At this moment, we have capability and we have space,” Aota said, while noting that planning for a new greenfield facility typically requires a lead time of three to four years.

Yamaha expects its total volumes (including exports) to exceed 1.1 million units in 2026, with domestic sales up 41 percent to 4.1 lakh units in the first half of the year. The company expects H2 volumes to be higher, supported by festive demand and new product launches. On the YZF-R2, which debuted yesterday at Rs 2.30 lakh, Yamaha has set an annual domestic sales target of 50,000 units.

Aota described India and Indonesia as Yamaha’s two biggest global growth engines, with India offering the stronger long-term growth opportunity. However, he noted that India must continue improving manufacturing productivity and technical capabilities to narrow the gap with Indonesia and expand its role in Yamaha’s global manufacturing network. The company employs approximately 10,000 people across its Indian operations and has invested over Rs 2,000 crore in research, development and manufacturing in India over the past eight to ten years. The quantum of investment required for the next phase of expansion has not been disclosed.

Indonesia Earthquake:
