The Fortuner undoubtedly has a larger and more powerful diesel engine than that of the Sorento, that too paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system for functions like torque assist under load, engine start/stop, and brake energy recuperation. On the other hand, the Sorento comes with an 8-speed gearbox instead of a 6-speed one, which could enable better fuel efficiency on the highway. Not only is the top-spec Sorento diesel much more feature-packed than the Fortuner, it’s cheaper by around Rs 4.5 lakh as well.
